Selling handmade cosmetics

How to sell your homemade cosmetics

Over the last year, there's been lots of new businesses appearing. With people being furloughed and having lots more time, lots of us turned our hands to new hobbies or had more time to pursue interests that we were previously too busy for. Many of these have been developed into brand new businesses, and I love seeing them grow on social media. BUT, and this quite a large BUT. I have also seen lots of new cosmetic businesses appearing, many of which are clearly not following the cosmetic regulations that have been carefully set out to ensure the safety of the consumer. I obviously notice their failings (labelling being the most obvious indicator that they're not legal) but I thought I'd share with you the regulations that have to be followed. Then you can either spot legitimate businesses for yourself, or set up your own!

formulate your products

Carefully develop your recipes and get your friends and family to test them out, giving you honest feedback. Sort your packaging materials, and once your happy, you're ready for the next step...

get a cosmetic product safety report

The biggest expense, and the biggest headache you'll face is your CPSR assessment. This is probably the most important piece of paperwork you'll obtain, and legally you have to provide proof you have this if anyone asks. It includes all details of your recipe, from base ingredients to fragrances, and even asks you to provide details of the appearance and packaging of your cosmetics. (Top tip - be as vague as possible when it comes to appearance and packaging to allow for alterations in the future!) They will also ask you for documents for each ingredient to ensure they are safe to use, and also the suppliers you have purchased from. These assessments are also a very lengthy process, and it can be months before the are approved and you are sent your documents. And the price? In a word, expensive! The company I use (Naturally Balmy) charges £120 for a single item. If you want a few variations of the same item (usually different fragrances) you're looking at anything up to £250!

more paperwork

The other documents you will need are a Good Manufacturing Process and a Product Information File. Both can be done at home, but are quite in depth. The GMP ensures that everything is made in a safe and hygienic way, while the PIF includes every little detail about each product. This includes all documentation for each ingredient used, compliance statements to make sure you're not testing on animals etc, and all recipe details.

even more paperwork

Every batch of your product you make, has to be logged. And this log should include a unique batch code (you can find ours on the back of our products), and a full list of all ingredients used, down to the ingredients batch number!
You also need to inform HMRC/Trading Standards so they are aware of what you're up to. They may want to see all your paperwork, or even pay you a visit!

Moisturising Bars

£2.50 - £3.75
Shop

labelling

The biggest give away that a product isn't being sold legally, is it's labelling. There are strict rules as to what has to be on cosmetic labelling, and how it should be presented. All ingredients should use their INCI name, which are the internationally recognised names for all ingredients available to use in cosmetics. Examples of these might be:
Beeswax - Cera Alba
Olive Oil - Olea Europaea
Coconut Oil - Cocos nucifera oil      ....     Catchy hey?!

And then if they're in soap, because they go through a chemical reaction, they change to sodium olivate (olive oil) or sodium cocoate (coconut oil etc... If the product you've bought simply states olive oil, or coconut oil alarm bells should start ringing!!

As mentioned before, they need a batch number on each product, in case of recalls that need to be made, they must state a weight (unless single use like bath bombs), have the responsible person's address, directions for use if required, and also safety statements such as 'For external use only', 'Avoid contact with eyes' etc...
I have spent many an hour trying to fit all this onto a label!!

cosmetic portal

Next, you have to notify the Cosmetic Products Notification Portal... and yes, it's as fun as it sounds!! You have to log each item you make, including recipe details and pictures of labels. It's not particularly difficult, but can be time consuming.

And finally... just a bit more paperwork

This time , in the form of insurance! There are several companies out there that provide insurance for handmade products, including cosmetics. We use Ian Wallace, who is very reasonable and seems popular with other makers.

still want to set up your own cosmetics business?!

Yes?! That's great! This post was never meant to put anyone off! It was more to highlight why items are priced the way they are, and so you could spot people who potentially aren't selling legally. Running your own business, in whatever form, is a labour of love, but can be incredibly rewarding. It allows me time with my family, more flexibility, and more importantly I get to do what I love each and every day! Just don't forget the paperwork.... there's so much paperwork!!!

Plastic Free Shaving

Every year around 60.7 million razors are thrown away in the UK every year, and with aerosol cans being notoriously difficult to recycle, it's time to make the switch to a more Earth friendly alternative.

Safety Razors

Go 'old school' with a safety razor! Not only are they completely free from plastic, but they can also reduce skin irritation, skin bumps and ingrown hairs. They are also kinder on your wallet and provide a seriously close shave! These little beauties are available in Chrome or Rose Gold, and come with 5 replacement blades.

shaving soap

Another easy swap is from shaving foam to a shaving soap. Our calendula shaving soap soothes the skin and lasts for ages! It is also vegan and perfect for both men and ladies, only having a subtle fragrance which is suitable for all. Just wet your shaving brush, whizz it around the top of the tin and you're good to go!

shaving brushes

The perfect partner for your shaving soap - a shaving brush! These amazing not only help you to spread the shaving soap effectively, but also exfoliate as they go. Made from sustainably sourced oak and synthetic fibres, these brushes are vegan friendly.

beard balm

And to finish your plastic free shaving routine, why not add some beard balm for the gents? Our beard balm helps to condition and shape wayward beards, and nourishes the skin underneath. Fragranced with Rosemary & Pine essential oils giving it hair growth and anti-inflammatory properties - great for itchiness.

Plastic Free Alternatives

Here at Mersea Mudd Shack we're all about reducing the amount of plastic we use, both as a business and in our household. Which is why we stock a small range of plastic free products that can help you to reduce your plastic use, and compliment our products.

Soap Bags

The first, and probably our favourite plastic free swap comes in the form of a soap bag (sometimes called a soap saver). They are the perfect partner to your bar of soap, and are designed to be used as a replacement to shower gel. Just pop your bar of soap in the bag, add water, get it lathered up and get washing! It's also a brilliant way of using up those little scraps of soap that are just a bit too small to wash your hands with anymore.
You know that beautiful feeling of washing your hands in our beeswax soap - imagine that feeling all over!
Made from sisal, which is sustainably grown and biodegradable, and just look at the price! Bargain!
Hang up between uses to allow the soap to dry and last longer.

bamboo soap dishes

Another soap companion, this time in the form of a soap dish (one of a few kinds of soap dishes we stock). Made from sustainably sourced bamboo with a layer of non-toxic cotton derived waterproof paint over them which means they last longer than others. But they can still be composted at the end of their life! Drying your soap bar between uses will prolong their life, and these bargain priced soap dishes will look great wherever you keep your soap!

ceramic soap dishes

A little more pricey, but just look at them! These beautiful soap dishes are handmade in Devon. They have curved bottoms, or feet to ensure your soap doesn't sit in a puddle. Available in a wide range of colours, the perfect statement piece in your bathroom.

Plastic Free Packaging

Being free from plastic and as eco-friendly as possible is at the heart of everything we do, and is the reason we created our company in the first place. Our products are all plastic-free, often offering an alternative to the commonly found plastic options, but we also make every effort to ensure that all our packaging and postal supplies are as earth friendly as they can be.

CANDLES
Our candles come in either repurposed honey jars or pudding pots. They are either  donated by locals, sourced second hand or taken from our own household. (But there's only so many of those puddings one family can eat!). They are then sterilised and cleaned thoroughly before we turn them into containers for our candles.
They also come with paper stickers, twine and brown paper gift tags, all fully recyclable.

MELTS
Our larger 20g melts come in recyclable wrapping, and when bought in a bag of 4 are presented in a burlap bag, which is also fully biodegradable. Again with a cardboard gift tag. Our 100g bags come in glassine bags, which are fully compostable, recyclable and biodegradable. We even supply our heart shaped melts completely package free to local refill shops, where they are displayed in a pick 'n' mix style display!

SOAPS
Our larger soaps are wrapped in recycled brown paper, with Kraft labels to hold them all together. The Queen Bee soap bars and guest soaps come with just a paper strip, and the rose shaped soaps are wrapped in a sustainably sourced and chlorine free coffee filter.

HAIR CARE
From shampoo bars wrapped in tissue paper, to conditioner bars packaged in glassine bags we carry our plastic-free theme throughout our products. We use aluminium tins for our dry shampoo, which are also recyclable.

POSTAGE
Even our postal supplies are eco-friendly! Our cardboard boxes are 100% recycled and recyclable, and we use paper tape to seal them shut. The products inside are protected with shredded paper and tissue paper - no bubble wrap in sight! We even use a stamp to mark our boxes meaning there is less waste, and our business cards are also made from brown card which can go into your cardboard collection - although we hope you'll keep them so you know where to order from next time!

INGREDIENTS
And finally, we have an arrangement with our main ingredient supplier, where we can take back out empty plastic containers and have them refilled. Where this is not possible, we recycle all our waste, or even use some of the empty containers in our refill delivery service!

Gift Ideas For Easter

We love chocolate as much as the next person here at Mersea Mudd Shack, but do you ever feel like you want to give something different? My daughter will often receive a number of Easter Eggs, and while the gesture is very much welcome, the amount of chocolate in the house is sometimes not so welcome! (For my sake of waistline as well as her health!)

This is why we've come up with a range of Easter Gifts that are a perfect chocolate-free and plastic-free alternative.

egg shaped beeswax candles

Our egg candles are made using local beeswax and a healthy splodge of coconut oil to help them burn more smoothly. They use a cotton braided wick and give off the mild soothing scent of honey when burnt. They should burn for around 5+ hours, long enough for your Easter lunch! We normally sell them individually, but we've added them as a set of 6 in an egg box especially for Easter!

Mother's Day

Gift Ideas For Mother's Day

Motherhood is the greatest thing, and the hardest thing

This quote seems particularly poignant at the moment with everything that is going on. As a mother myself, juggling home-schooling and working, and dealing with the daily 'mum-guilt' I can fully relate to this quote! I love my daughter with every inch of my being, but that doesn't mean that some days I just want to run and hide (possibly in a hot bath with a glass of gin!).

The mothers in our lives need some recognition for all that they do, relentlessly, for the good of their families. Whether it's your wife who is doing an amazing job of looking after your children, a friend who has a new-born and can't experience all the things that I took for granted when I had my daughter, your own mother who is unable to see their children and experience the joy of their grandchildren at the moment, or someone who is at home with young children without the support of other mums at baby groups and their extended families.

It seems like Mother's Day is even more important this year. We're either being kept apart from our mothers, or the mothers in our households are juggling home-schooling and working alongside all the usual stresses that come along with parenthood! (I am by no means belittling all those hard-working Dads out there, and we are grateful for all that you do - you'll get your chance to be told how awesome you are on Father's Day!)

To help you to send a gift to someone who you think may just need a little 'pick-me-up', I've come up with a list of some of our most popular gifts. Ones that I think would be particularly suitable to show that Mum in your life that they are thought of. That they are appreciated, and that they are loved.

The Crafty Mum
Everyone seems to have turned to some form of crafting to get them through whatever number lockdown we've been on. A gift that gives them something to create, and also fills an hour or so of their day might just be the things you're after. This is why we developed our DIY kits, to help you through those long lockdown days!

Our beeswax wrap kit includes everything you need to make three 25cmx25cm reusable fabric food wraps. (We're big fans of beeswax wraps here - we even have a separate blog post dedicated to them!) They are an amazing plastic-free alternative to cling film, and they're pretty cute to boot!

If that's not for her, then how about a candle making kit? With the option of making 1x or 2x 3oz beeswax candles, they can fill their home with the sweet smell of beeswax, and the satisfaction that comes with something homemade.

The Eco Mum
Whether your Mum is an eco warrior, or is keen to explore some more earth-friendly options, you're sure to find something on our website for her. We are all about being plastic-free and have a wide range of sustainably sourced and handmade items. So much so that you might end up with 'plastic-free blindness'! Which is why we came up with the idea of our Eco Starter Kit! It contains a few simple swaps you can make to get started on your eco-friendly journey.
The kit includes: A beeswax wrap, 2x metal straws, 2x reusable face wipes, 1x soap bag, 1x bamboo soap dish, and one of our large bars of beautifully moisturising beeswax soap.
(Items when sold separately - £17.50)

Me Time Mum
Everyone needs a bit of 'me time' now and again - if you can't do it on Mother's Day then when can you?! Maybe it's a hot bath with a candle and a bath bomb, or maybe it's the relaxing scent of one of our beeswax melts filling your home, give them the gift of relaxation this year.

Simple Bath Bomb Recipe

Make Your Own Bath Bombs With This Simple Recipe

Did you miss our deadline to order for Valentines? Or are you home-schooling and need something fun to do with the kids to entertain them? (Surely it counts as science right?!) Or maybe you're bored and home on lockdown and need something to do for an hour or so?! Then this simple recipe to make bath bombs might just be the solution you need!

You can experiment with colours, fragrances and shapes. This recipe is easy to adapt to whatever you have in the cupboards!

Ingredients:
100g Bicarbonate of Soda
50g Citric Acid (available from Wilko, Holland & Barrett or online)
25g Cornflour
25g Epsom Salts (optional)
2 tbsp oil (sunflower, olive oil, melted coconut oil...)
Water
1/4tsp essential oil or fragrance oil (available from Holland & Barrett or online)
A few drops of liquid colouring (either cosmetic or food colouring)
Edible cake sprinkles, Dried flowers or orange peel to decorate (optional)

You will also need:
Mixing Bowls
Whisk
Sieve
Plastic or Metal Moulds

Pretty much anything can be used as a mould for your bath bombs! From yogurt pots, to plastic packaging from toys, Easter egg packaging, silicone ice cube trays, silicone cup cake cases or even plastic biscuit cutters placed on a tray.

What to do

1. Sieve all the dry ingredients into a bowl, and whisk until mixed together.
2. Pour the oil, colour and fragrance into a separate bowl and mix together as well as you can.
3. VERY slowly add the oil mixture to the dry ingredients bowl, whisking as you go.
4. When they are mixed, add a few drops of water and whisk again. Whenever you add wet ingredients to the dry it will fizz, so make sure you keep whisking! The mixture should clump together in your hands when you press it together - be careful not to get it too wet!
5. If you're adding any decorations, drop them into the bottom of your mould. Pack your mixture tightly on top, pressing down and smoothing out the top.
6. Leave your bath bomb in it's mould for a few hours to dry and harden. Then carefully remove it - it's now ready to drop in the bath!

Top Tips
- If your using a two sided mould, you need to overfill your mould before pushing the two sides together. This will help the sides to stick, although this can be tricky to get the hang of!
- Make sure you use either cosmetic colouring, or LIQUID food colouring. The gel colouring will clump and not spread as well.
- Make sure you leave them to dry in a warm dry place. Humidity is not a bath bombs friend - they can be fickle little creatures!
- If you have more than one colour, why not make your bath bombs in layers?!
- Use your bath bombs within 6 months of making - as if they won't be used by then?!
- If you're giving them as a gift, it's a good idea to leave them for a few days to fully harden. Otherwise you'll have bath dust!
- You can colour your Epsom salts separately using your food colouring, and then layer them at the bottom to create a sparkly geode type effect!
- We add buttermilk powder to our bath bombs for extra foam.
- Steer clear of glitter - not only does it make a mess of your bath, but some can also be toxic when added to hot bath water.

Here's The Science-y Bit!

If you are home-schooling, and want to add a bit of science into the mix, here's how bath bombs work.

Bath bombs fizz because of a reaction between the water in your bath and the combination of bicarbonate of soda and citric acid. The bubbles are made of carbon dioxide gas, and this is an acid-base reaction. The cornflour helps to slow down the reaction between these ingredients, making your bath bomb last longer.

For a complete science experiment, why not see if they behave differently in hot water and cold water? Do they fizz for longer? Do they dissolve quicker?
Or maybe you could try adding more or less of some of the ingredients to see if this changed the reaction?

Of course, if this all seems too much of a fuss, you can always buy them from us! ;-)

With our soaps taking at least a month to cure, we're always working ahead of ourselves, (It's the 1st February and we're already working on egg-shaped goodies for Easter!) but have you bought your gift for your loved one yet?

With us all spending more time apart, Valentines Day seems an amazing excuse to send our loved ones a gift. It's usually a day devoted to our other-halves, who most of us are living with, but this year I vote we spread the love a little further!

All our products are ideal for showing someone you care and that you're thinking of them. But we thought we'd round up our top 5 to help make choosing between them all a little easier.

5 - DIY Kits

With many of our loved ones being on furlough, or having self-isolate, one of our eco-friendly DIY kits is the perfect gift for them to kill an hour or so!
You can chose between a kit for making your own beeswax wraps, or a kit to make your own beeswax candles. Both kits come with full instructions, are eco-friendly and handmade with love. Discover the wonders of beeswax!

Beeswax Wraps - all you need to know

Making and Maintaining Your Beeswax Wrap

We're a big fan of beeswax here at Mersea Mudd Shack, so much so, we've built a business on it!! Beeswax is a truly versatile material and it's uses are almost endless, but one of our favourites is the beeswax wrap.

A simple plastic free swap, a beeswax wrap replaces your cling film, going around sandwiches in your lunch box, ends of cheese in the fridge, over bowls of leftovers. Basically anywhere you use cling film, a beeswax wrap can be used instead! You can even use them to make piping bags, to open difficult jars, or to wrap up toothbrushes or soap for when you're on the move.

Our beeswax wraps are made using 100% cotton fabric and local beeswax. That's it!

How to Use Your beeswax Wrap

When you first receive your wrap, it may be a little stiff from being folded and sent out. Just open it up and give it a wiggle to revive it! Flexing it and folding it will have it ready to use in no time.

When you're ready to use it, just use the heat of your hands to mould it over whatever you have chosen to wrap up. The beeswax is naturally adhesive, and your wrap will seal around your food.

Beeswax wraps shouldn't be used with hot foods as it will melt the wax off, naked flames should be avoided, as should ovens and microwaves. We also advise you not to store raw meat or fish in them, to avoid contamination.

refreshing your beeswax wrap

Beeswax wraps will last up to a year before they need some attention. You may notice at this point that they start to lose their stick, or notice a lack of wax. At this point, you can revitalise your wrap by just popping it in the oven for a few minutes. Preheat your oven to 60 degrees, pop your wrap on some baking paper, and place it in the oven for 3-4 minutes. Keep a close eye on it. When the wax has melted, take it out and just waft it about until cool. You can also do this with an iron, using two sheets of baking paper (one on top, one underneath), re-melting the beeswax and cooling again.

If you've already tried this, or they're just a bit past it, then you can give them a fresh coat of beeswax using one of our beeswax blocks. Grate the beeswax onto your wrap and use either the oven or the iron technique we mentioned a minute ago.

Beeswax wraps should last a lifetime, with care and refreshing. But if something terrible happens, and they are no longer useable you can pop them in your compost. Or why not try making eco-friendly fire lighters, by cutting them up into strips and scrunching them into balls. They burn beautifully slowly and are perfect for log burners and campfires alike.

MAking your own beeswax wraps

You can also make beeswax wraps from scratch yourself. Again by using either an oven or an iron and some baking paper to melt the beeswax onto some 100% cotton fabric. Getting the right amount of beeswax takes a little practise, but start small and you can always add more if you don't have enough!
To make it easier, we've created a 'Make Your Own Beeswax Wrap Kit' which has everything you'll need!

More than 1.2 billion metres, or 745,000 miles of cling film is used in the UK every year. Cling film is difficult to recycle, and the majority of it ends up in landfill where is takes 100s of years to degrade and can end up in our oceans. Yes, disposable is more convenient, but beeswax wraps are definitely a more eco-friendly alternative.
And they're far prettier too!
